BBB tutorial SEVEN:
29 September Moray House Edinburgh & 6 October Glasgow Caledonian University
Snippets from discussions
This tutorial essentially focussed on more preparations for the exam.
We worked through some more of the multiple-choice CMA-type questions
from Part 1, and also brainstormed about some of the essay questions from
Part 2 of old exam papers.
Emphasis was placed on:
a) careful rationing of your time in the exam (as outlined in the exam
discussion notes);
b) paying careful attention to the precise wording of the question - and
answering the question precisely;
c) making sure to write rough notes and essay plan in the answer book (as
well as the finished essay!) and not crossing anything out (hoping to pick
up a few extra marks for items in the rough work);
d) remember to structure your essay clearly, writing in headings so that
it's obvious that the essay is organised into
(i) Introduction,
(ii) facts/examples and discussion (possibly with sub-headings),
(iii) Conclusion,
out of the 20 marks for each essay, there are 4 marks easily obtained for just doing this.
Also made available were some brief revision notes, relating to neural
and physiological aspects.
Of course, you're all wished Good Luck in the Exam.!
Once it's all over and you remember how much you enjoyed
learning about this stuff, but wished you had more time and flexibility
about it, you might enjoy this book:
Edward O. Wilson (1998) Consilience - The Unity of Knowledge.
A nice wee paperback, just 374 pages, at only £8.99, published by Abacus.
Wilson's book covers a very wide range of material - not just scientific
matters, but also the arts and humanities.
For a book just slightly more focussed on the incredible breadth of
topics with which we've been concerned in BBB, but from a slightly different
perspective, have a read of :
Ian Glynn (1999) An Anatomy of Thought. Another paperback (hardly
"wee" at 532 pages) at only £8.99, published by Phoenix.
Much of this will seem quite familiar, but more enjoyable without the
pressure of an exam when you've finished reading it just for fun!
