SD206 - Guide to the Six Books
The chart below is an attempt to show how different parts of the course
fit together.
Go to chart
The 'crossword' is based mainly on cross-references made in Chapters
of Books 3 - 6, to material in Chapters of Books 1 and 2. For example,
if we take Book 1, Chapter 3 (Genes) and follow the row across the page,
we can see that it has little bearing on Books 3 or 5, but features prominently
in Books 4 and 6. But whilst the chart provides some information about
what material in Books 1 and 2 crops up later, it does not convey the actual
'importance'. For example, in some cases the Book 1 or 2 material is important
for understanding some later points (e.g. Book 5 leans quite heavily on
Book 1 Chapter 7), but in other cases the reference is merely a passing
comment. I have tried to convey importance to some extent by the colour
of the shading, shown in the Key.
I must stress that this chart is my personal interpretation (with grateful
thanks to a colleague, Robin Orchardson) and it is not an 'official' plan
of the course. It is provided as a general guidance to what parts of Books
1 and 2 are likely to be relevant later on; the degree of relevance is
roughly indicated by the colour of the shading. You do not have to be 100%
'on top' of these chapters before you proceed, but you can see where you
might find it helpful to go back to Book 1 or 2 to check up on points.
Also, the chart does not show how the chapters of Books 3 - 6 inter-relate.
As a very simple guide to the 'later relevance' of a chapter, count the
shaded squares along its row. You will see that some chapters are rarely
encountered again (e.g. Book 1, Chapters 6 and 7). In contrast, the material
in Chapters 4 and 8 of Book 2 crops up repeatedly. Note that 'later relevance'
does NOT necessarily indicate 'importance' or likelihood of examination
questions!
