What is it . . . 

August in a whorl - or several

Here you can see rather a messy array 
of twisting and turning things,
These seem to wind about,
forming whorls, or ridges, or rings.

Rather like a fingerprint, but surely not;
it depends on the scale, you might guess.
We could be looking at an aerial photo
of a maze or some anatomical mess.

Then again, it could be microscopic as usual.
