The picture on the left shows a different view of the mystery structure.
In fact, it shows slightly oblique longitudinal sections through three
of them.
Another of these structures is shown in higher magnification in the
picture on the right.
The structure is made up of cylindrical units which can be seen in transverse
section (TS), i.e. cut across, or in longitudinal section (LS), i.e. cut
lengthways.
These are, in fact, biological structures - parts of cells.
If we look even closer, we can make out features of the membrane which surrounds the cell - see below.
As well as the double-layered structure of the cell membrane, we can also see bands of dense material holding the cylindrical units together (some are indicated by the arrows).
