Well, that explains the name for my little web-site.
In Greek mythology Ariadne was the daughter of Minos, king of Crete, and Pasiphaë, daughter of the sun god Helios. The hero Theseus came to Crete from Athens to slay the Minotaur (half bull, half human) that was kept at the centre of the Labyrinth - a maze built by King Minos. Ariadne gave Theseus a ball of thread, which Daedalus, who had designed the labyrinth had given to her. Theseus tied one end to the door and unwound the thread as he went along, so that he could find and kill the Minotaur and then to escape from the maze by rewinding the thread.
Unfortunately, things went badly wrong after that, as Theseus and his companions sailed home towards Athens, taking Ariadne and stopping off at the island of Naxos. Somehow or other, Ariadne was left behind on Naxos and when Theseus finally returned she had died - some thanks eh!
